Overview

Understanding ever evolving nature of media profession, media companies need to be more involved with media schools so as to develop an industry aligned curriculum which plugs the big talent gap in the field of journalism and mass communication. The entire framework of our department has been built on the premise of dynamic interaction with media professionals from across the country. We have designed our curriculum in consultation with and based on inputs from the industry, we keep upgrading our course content to ensure that our students learn about media in its latest format, so that our students fit into the ever growing media industry. The Mass Communication course at Jagannath University provides a healthy balance in academics and practical’s added by visits and outdoors to ensure that the pass outs are able to make into successful and dynamic professionals in the media world.

Course Objectives

Effective Mass Communication is one of the most potent weapons in the modern world. It can change the tide of public opinion and send vital messages out to a large section of society. The number of news channels, newspapers and radio stations are continually on the rise. The intelligent readership is growing and books are seeing resurgence in the market. The media has many segments: the print medium being the oldest; Journalism via electronic media such as the television, radio, satellite communication; Advertising and Public Relations, new media with added technology has taken it further to reach millions engaged in digital era of society.

The Institute offers programmes in areas of Journalism & Mass Communication to under-graduates by providing a strong foundation and comprehensive training to aspirants from any discipline to pursue careers in the media industry. The program focuses on nurturing the creative talent of students by providing them with hands on training and media exposure. The programme gives an opportunity to study the Media, ranging from media issues to media marketing; research and journalistic techniques to public relations, organizing events and exhibitions. Students are also encouraged to specialize in Print, Broadcast & Web Journalism, Radio Programming &Production, Television Production &Film making, PR & Advertising, Corporate Communication, Radio Jockey and Communication Skills.

  • Operational knowledge of Social Media, Cyber Journalism and E- Journalism.
  • Visits to media related places in Delhi and outside like ‘The Tribune’ newspaper, Chandigarh; Film City, Noida and Kurukshetra along with other hill stations and scenic places to enhance practical knowledge of photography, videography, interactive interviews and project work.
  • Participation in audience based programmes on current events, political developments, stock markets, women issues, price rise, international development on various prestigious news channels like Doordarshan, NDTV, AajTak, India TV, IBN-7, etc.
  • Workshops focusing on enhancing communication skills, report writing, press coverage, presentation, project works and production techniques.
  • Students attend International Film Festival at Goa and other places every year wherein they participate in screening of films, attend seminars and workshops, interact and interview various national and international Directors and Actors
  • We have our own Community Radio 96.9 MHz operating for 10 hours per day with programmes designed and produced by our students in cooperation and interest of community.
  • Students carry research in JJ colonies, slums and economically weaker sections of society to find out their problems and convert them into T.V. Documentaries and Radio Programmes.
  • Frequent visits to Press, PR and Advertising Agencies Parliament House, Radio Station and T.V channels.
